Other Alternative Energy Jobs using energy sources such as Solar, Geothermal, and Wind power.

What is meant by "Alternative" energy? When most people think of energy to "run stuff," they usually think of fossil fuels. In fact, there are a lot of sources of energy in this world, many of which man has been utilizing since the first cave man built a fire. Some of today’s ‘new’ alternatives are really just updated versions of the ‘old’ ways of getting things done. The challenge is to learn how to utilize some of the old, mostly renewable sources of energy, in a way that produces large amounts of energy in a cost-effective way.

Green Lake Dam
Here in Sitka, Alaska, about 80% of our energy comes from outside of our island community, in the form of oil and gas that is barged in. The other 20% comes from our own hydroelectric plant, which uses the water that comes from the dams at Blue Lake and Green Lake. As long as we are blessed with the rain that we love so much here in Southeast Alaska, we will have sufficient power to run our lights, heaters, refrigerators, and other household and business equipment.
Of course, wherever and however energy is being harnessed and distributed, there will be jobs. The possibilities for exciting careers in these areas are endless. So, if you like the idea of developing energy sources that are more renewable than oil, gas, or coal, you might want to pursue a career involving ‘alternative’ energies.
