What do you think of when you think about construction? A new home being built? The new auditorium at Sitka High School? Renovations of the dorm buildings at Mt. Edgecumbe High School? Well, this is just a start.

There are many aspects to the construction industry, and if you enjoy working with tools, learning to use equipment, and being part of building something new, the construction industry may be for you.

Here are a few examples of construction jobs in Alaska:

  • Architect - plan and design residential and commercial structures
  • Carpenter – do the actual building, including framing, drywall, and roofing
  • Contractor – manage the construction project – some specialize in specific jobs, such as installing the electrical system or framing
  • Construction Laborer – provide assistance with all aspects of construction and work with a variety of materials
  • Electrical Worker – install and repair electrical systems in buildings and structures
  • Engineer – design structures, electric systems, highways, and many other things. There are Civil Engineers, Environmental Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, and others
  • Heavy Equipment Operator – operate and run equipment  - backhoes, loaders, trucks, and others - at a construction site
  • Plumber – install and repair plumbing systems in buildings and structures
    Welder/Ironworker – work with metal to create structures
