What do you think of when you think of mining? Goldminers of the 19th century, who came to Alaska hoping to become wealthy? Deep, dark holes in the earth? Or Snow white and the seven dwarfs?

Mining is a growing industry in Alaska, and there are mines all over the state: from Kensington and Greens Creek in Juneau to Red Dog Mine north of Kotzebue; from Pogo Mine south of Fairbanks to Pebble Mine in southwest Alaska. 

Mining is challenging work, but the extraction of minerals and metals is very important to our everyday life. In Alaska, the industry produces minerals, metals, and construction materials.

Here are a few examples of Alaska Mining jobs:

  • Administration/Support – provide clerical assistance for companies, work in warehouses, train and ensure safety of employees
  • Electrician – install and maintain electrical wiring
  • Engineer  - many types of engineers work in the mining industry, including: Mine Engineer, Planning Engineer, Geological Engineer, Mining Safety Engineer, Environmental Engineer
  • Geologist – maps out the mining site, maintains a model of the site, and tracks site reserves
  • Heavy Equipment Operator – operates equipment, such as bulldozers, graders, tractors, loaders, and backhoes
  • Maintenance/Mechanic – repairs and maintains equipment used for mining
  • Mining Machine Operator – operate various machinery to extract and gather minerals and metals
