1. How did you become interested in your job?

I started with hands-on experience building someone’s home and learning a paying trade. Seeing the progress from starting with nothing in the morning, and having a floor and walls by the end of the day, is amazing. It keeps me interested and motivated.

2. What do you do on a typical day?

In the morning, I get the tools and materials ready to use during the day. Then I make a ‘to-do’ list and work my way through it, cutting materials and assembling structures. I also do some surveying, when needed.

3. What Training or education have you had for your job?

All my training has been hands-on experience, learning how to do things from more experienced people. I did have good math skills from my Sitka High classes, which the employer demanded.

I’ve also had to use a lot of common sense and demonstrate the will to do well.

4. What is your favorite part of your job?

Facing the challenges and seeing the progress and the results!

5. What is the starting pay for someone in your position?

$18 an hour.

6. What advice would you give a teen thinking about a similar career?

Work hard, ask questions and listen. Stay busy, ask more questions, watch and learn. Think about what you’re doing, what you’re learning and what you’re earning. Don’t give up.
